Sometimes you see a leaked picture or two of a handheld and don’t think twice about it. Other times, you take one look and immediately want to will it into existence, or get Zu to make it for the masses. Such is the case with a mysterious “Anbernic RG Slide,” as there are two images making their way through the RH Discord.
The first image isn’t all that much to write home about, as we assume it’s just an example of what the box for the RG Slide might look like. The device on the box is weird too, with the oblong cutouts on either side, while showing off a controller that includes both a D-pad and dual joysticks.
As for the second image, it’s just an AI render, likely based on the handheld featured in the first picture. But it does give us a closer look at what the RG Slide could look like, provided that this actually becomes a reality. Basically, it’s like if you were to take the PSP Go, T-Mobile Sidekick, and Sony Xperia Play, combine them, modernize them, and then toss in a pair of inset joysticks.
It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that we just don’t yet know whether this is real or not. However, speculation suggests that if it is, the RG Slide might feature a 4-inch display with a 16:9 aspect ratio, which also wouldn’t be very surprising. This is to say that there’s no indication of whether there’s another batch of H700 chips lying in wait, slated for the Slide to enter production.
What I’m hoping is that the RG34XXSP marks the end of the H700 supply, resulting in Anbernic using the RG Slide as a jumping-off point for a new lineup of similarly powered retro handhelds. Some comments have suggested that Anbernic should make the Slide its next Android handheld, and one that’s powered by the Dimensity 8300, especially now that it seems that Anbernic has worked out the performance issues with the RG557.
It’s not often that I see I render of a handheld and immediately want one, but that’s exactly how I felt when Deadfred just dropped the first image in the RH Discord. I’m just hoping that the RG34XXSP can manage to hold my attention long enough for Anbernic to fire up the production line for the RG Slide.
