One of the biggest stories to come out of CES 2025 has been SteamOS. The Lenovo Legion Go S has already been making a splash as the first non-Valve device with official SteamOS support, and it looks as though the tinkerers among us may get to try it on some other devices in the near future too.

In a blog post on the Steam Store, Valve confirmed that the Legion Go S is the first handheld licensed to ship with the SteamOS, with a promised beta for testing “other handhelds” coming before the Legion’s official release in May:

In addition, the same work that we are doing to support the Lenovo Legion Go S will improve compatibility with other handhelds. Ahead of Legion Go S shipping, we will be shipping a beta of SteamOS which should improve the experience on other handhelds, and users can download and test this themselves. And of course we’ll continue adding support and improving the experience with future releases.

For those unfamiliar, SteamOS is an operating system, like Windows, developed by Valve and implemented on the Steam Deck. There have been forks and ports made by enthusiasts to support other devices, but this will be the first we see of an official image designed for hardware that was not developed by Valve’s internal teams. Unlike Windows, SteamOS is built from the ground up as a gaming OS, making for as much of a seamless console experience as PC users could hope for.

SteamOS has inarguably changed the Linux gaming landscape forever, and porting it to other devices may see mobile Windows installs drop across the board. If Valve can continue offering amazing compatibility through its Proton layer, and get up to speed on a few concerns like anti-cheat, they may soon dominate the entire mobile PC landscape.
