With the dust settling a bit following the announcement and pre-order launch of the AYN Thor, the company gave us a bit of reprieve before getting the Odin 3 ball rolling.

After about a week or so, bits and pieces of information were revealed about what AYN’s Odin 2 successor would bring. Now that the cat’s out of the bag, here’s everything you need to know about the AYN Odin 3.

AYN Odin 3 Specs

While we suspect that the KONKR Pocket FIT will be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite, it hasn’t technically been confirmed yet. As such, the Odin 3 is officially the first handheld to be powered by Qualcomm’s current flagship chip.

Odin 3 vs. Odin 2

If you’re wondering about how much of an upgrade the Odin 3’s Snapdragon 8 Elite offers over the Odin 2’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, AYN was kind enough to provide a graph. According to the numbers, the 8 Elite offers an almost 60% boost in Single Core performance, along with more than an 80% increase in Multi-Core.

If you think that’s wild, the 8 Elite’s GPU is said to be 166% better than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. Just mind-boggling.

From there, the 8 Elite is paired with a total of four different RAM and storage configurations:

  • Base: 8GB RAM / 128GB UFS 3.1 Storage
  • Pro: 12GB RAM / 256GB UFS 4.0 Storage
  • Max: 16GB RAM / 512GB UFS 4.0 Storage
  • Ultra: 24GB RAM / 1TB UFS 4.0 Storage

It might seem like overkill, but I actually like the addition of the “Ultra” tier, especially when it comes to “future-proofing” your devices. All of this should provide more than enough horsepower to play and emulate practically anything you want.

Screen

Outside of the performance upgrades, the Odin 3 is getting another couple of major boosts courtesy of the display. AYN is sticking with the 6-inch screen size, but instead of an IPS panel limited to 60Hz, the Odin 3 features an AMOLED panel. Plus, it’s equipped with a 120Hz refresh rate, something that many will surely appreciate.

Design and Colors

When we got our first glimpse at the Odin 3, quite a few of us thought that it looked like a Retroid Pocket 5. That’s because the Odin 3 is adopting the same glass front design, with cutouts for the buttons, speakers, sticks, and D-pad.

This had me worried a bit, as the Pocket 5 just wasn’t very comfortable to use, no matter how much I wanted to. Thankfully, the Odin 3 is a bit thicker than the Pocket 5, giving AYN the ability to implement some grips that actually look comfortable.

AYN Odin 3 Color Voting Results

Shortly thereafter, AYN confirmed three of the colors that the Odin 3 will be available in: Black, White, and Rainbow. However, there was also a community poll over on the AYN Discord, where those in the server could vote between a Clear Blue and Clear Purple.

In what came as a surprise to some, with almost 2400 votes accounted for, the results were essentially a 50/50 split. As a result, AYN later confirmed that it would be adding both color options to the join the rest of the ensemble.

AYN Odin 3 Accessories Collection

Oh, and we also learned that like the Thor, AYN will be offering a wide variety of accessories for the Odin 3. But we aren’t sure if we’ll be able to purchase these at the same time as pre-orders, or if they’ll be available sometime before launch.

Odin 3 Price and Pre-orders

Speaking of pre-orders and the launch, that brings us to the biggest question of all: How much is the Odin 3 going to cost? Well, for the Base Odin 3 with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, it’ll cost $299 as part of the “Super Early Bird” Indiegogo campaign. Yes, that’s the same price that AYN is selling the refurbished Odin 2 for, which is just absolutely insane.

Here’s the complete price breakdown:

So even if you get the Odin 3 Ultra, it’s still less than what the AYANEO Portal EVO or Pocket DS cost. Which, again, is simply absurd to think about for a handheld powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite.

Pre-orders are scheduled to begin on Sunday, September 7 at 9:30 PM ET over on Indiegogo. From the looks of it, you’ll want to be quick, as there only 100 Super Early Bird devices available across the four different configurations.

And I almost forgot to mention that while pre-orders begin soon, the Odin 3 isn’t expected to begin shipping until “late November.”
