A cloudy day indeed: AYN has announced on their Discord that they will be officially discontinuing the Odin 2 series of consoles, which includes the Odin 2, Odin 2 Mini, and Odin 2 Portal. While this might come as a shock to most, especially while the Thor and Odin 3 are currently in pre-order limbo, this is 3 years old and… well… I guess it’s time.
The Odin 2 Portal: A Welcome Price Drop!
As of the time of publication, the Odin 2 and Odin 2 Mini have already been removed from AYN’s official website. But (a big but), they have remaining stock of the ever-popular Odin 2 Portal with a heavy discount on all models, with the Base model going for an $80 to $249 total, to a $50 on the Max model, bringing it to $449. This promotion will last from January 29th to February 25th, or until the console sells out. So maybe grab the handheld darling of the mid 2020s while you can. This news, while bleak, at least has that silver lining.
The Odin 2: In Memorium
What ‘is’ is now ‘was’, and was ‘still’ is now ‘no longer’. The Odin 2 was the golden standard of high-end emulation in its time and attracted a whole new group of curious handheld enjoyers into our space, much larger than that of the release of the Odin 1. While no longer the king of Android performance with the onset of the SD 8 Elite powered Odin 3, the Odin 2 will hold a special place in the ethos of our niche (that is increasingly becoming not a niche).
Especially given the Odin 2’s presence on our site/socials, its popularity is second to none. That being said, you will find this gem immortalized in media, and you will be able to find models floating around in the used market until time immemorial, so I suppose it isn’t dead-dead, but it’s clear AYN’s focus is full steam ahead on the Odin 3, and whatever bright future we have ahead of us for the space.
