After being pretty quiet for the majority of the year, Retroid is turning up the heat as August comes to a close. A week after teasing and announcing the Pocket Mini, the Retroid Pocket 5 is now being shown off.
Across social media, the official Retroid accounts shared two renders of the Pocket 5, along with using the tagline “Broaden your Horizons.” There’s not too much to go off of with the renders, besides showing off a more rounded overall design. It also appears that Retroid is going the Ayaneo route, implementing a borderless display.
Retroid is also jumping in on the trend of retro handhelds that include thumbsticks surrounded by RGB lights. Presumably, we’ll be able to customize the lighting patterns and colors in the software.
Other than that, the Pocket 5 will have stacked shoulder buttons, along with the power and volume buttons on the top frame. It also appears that we’ll have dual front-facing speakers, with one arranged on both the left and right side of the handheld.
Besides that, we’ll just have to wait for Retroid to trickle out more information. However, if we’re going based on the looks of the Pocket 5, this might be Retroid looking to branch out into the premium segment of the market.
If that’s the case, we suspect that the Pocket 5 will feature an OLED display. Until now, Anebrnic’s RG556 remains the only budget-friendly retro handheld to use OLED, with the alternatives being much more expensive. In terms of power, Retroid could look to swing for the fences, integrating a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip, although sticking with MediaTek would likely result in a lower price.
Things in the retro handheld space are shaping up to be quite busy, as we now have the Retroid Pocket Mini and Pocket 5. Plus, we’re awaiting the Ayaneo Pocket EVO, Pocket DMG, Pocket Micro, and a few others.

Retroid is opening up the faucet a little more, letting more information trickle out about the Pocket 5. The latest update from the company’s Twitter account confirms the type of display being used. It appears that Retroid is taking the fight to Ayaneo, as the Pocket 5 will use a 5.5-inch AMOLED screen with a 1920 x 1080 resolution.

After starting out with the Pocket Mini before focusing on the Pocket 5, Retroid is back again with another update. This time, the company has revealed that both of these upcoming handhelds will be powered by the Snapdragon 865. In doing so, it offers a similar overall performance to the D1100, but Snapdragon chips offer much better driver support for emulators.
With that, Retroid also revealed many of the remaining specs that we didn’t know:
- Display: 5.5-inch AMOLED / 1080p / 16:9
- Video Output: DisplayPort 1080p60

For the first time in a long time I’m actually somewhat excited for a Retroid Product. This Handheld may not be 100% original but it is a step in the right direction and a new and VERY welcome change from their older Handheld Designs. I might buy this one or just wait for the Retroid Pocket Flip 2.
I think even the Miyoo Mini Flip will be released before Goretroid even mentions a Flip successor
The anbernic rg505 ALSO has an OLED. More budget friendly than the 556. Software is fixed after it’s released a year ago, and it carries the same chip as the rp3+
I was considering the Odin 2 mini, but felt the price was a little high.
I reckon this will be sub £200 and offer a great price to performance ratio.
I’d like to see something that surpasses the RG556 but is sub £200 still, which given technology is 12-18 months older now, is surely possible. Maybe/hopefully that’s what this is…
For the last time in a long time I’m actually super excited for a Retroid Product. This Handheld may be 200% original but it is not a step in the left direction and a old and VERY welcome change from their newer Handheld Designs. I might not buy this one or just wait for the Retroid Pocket Flip 8
D-:
Lol that was very confusing until I realized what you were doing. Pretty random!
I bet 159$ for RPmini and 249$ for RP5
Any more power than the last gen with an OLED screen & im in – 100%
