Anbernic has just dropped a trailer video for a new device, the RG477M.

A previous Anbernic device, the RG405M is one of the devices held within the scene with a bit of a cult following, while it only has the T618 CPU, seen in devices such as the Retroid Pocket 3+, inside it, it is possibly the most powerfully retro handheld device which still retains the level of pocketability required to fit it into some jeans pockets without an unsightly bulge.

As usual for a new device, especially a new Anbernic device, we find it useful to cover “what we know”, “what we can reasonably guess,” and “what we don’t know”.

Anbernic RG477M: What We Know

the left hand side of the RG477M

Even compared to their usual pattern, Anbernic isn’t letting out much about the 477M.

We only really know 2 things about the device:

  • Colorways: The device will initially be available in two colorways: silver and a darker metallic color, possibly between gunmetal gray and bronze. The two colorways are particularly reminiscent of the two available colors for a previous Anbernic device: the RG552.
  • D-pad Placement: This is a D-pad up top device.

What We Can Reasonably Guess

the front of the RG477M

Metal Shell: Although not confirmed, it is almost unbelievable to think that Anbernic would release a device with “M” in the name that didn’t have a metal shell

Large Screen: Looking at the device, and assuming the size of the D-pad remains relatively consistent with other Anbernic devices, we can see that this device will have a larger screen. Anbernic has a consistent naming convention for devices, and this indicates that the RG447M will have a 4.7-inch screen. I would expect this to be the same 960p, 120Hz display used in the RG-Slide.

High-End Processor: The last number in an Anbernic device tends to indicate the CPU generation used. In this case previous number is 7, which suggests the CPU will be the same as in the RG557, the Dimensity 8300.

Operating System: The presence of what appear to be Back and Home buttons indicates that this will be an Android device.

What We Don’t Know

RAM and Storage: These specs have not yet been confirmed. However, if it’s running Android, it’s probably safe to assume it features an 8GB/128GB combination.

SD Card Slot: The video does not seem to show a microSD card slot.

Price & Release Date: As with all Anbernic releases, the Launch Price and Release Date are confirmed well after the initial launch video.
