Fresh off the release of the RG34XXSP and the showcase of the RG35XX Pro, Anbernic is apparently bringing select devices to Best Buy.

This marks a significant move for Anbernic, which has traditionally sold its products through its official website and online retailers. Anbernic previously released 12 handhelds during each month of the year throughout 2024, and this year, they have announced three handhelds thus far.

According to a recent listing spotted on Best Buy’s website, three of Anbernic’s latest Android-based handhelds are set to arrive in the near future: the RG556, RG406V, and RG406H.

Three Wild Devices Appear

The top-tier model among the listings is the Anbernic RG556, which features a 5.5-inch AMOLED display, 8GB of RAM, and a 128GB SSD, running on Android 13 with a Unisoc T820 processor. It’s priced at $269.99 on Best Buy. Known for its high-quality OLED screen, comfortable ergonomics, and powerful specs tailored for emulation, the RG556 is a favorite in the handheld space. Just recently, Anbernic released the follow-up to the 556, aptly named the RG557. Through Anbernic’s official website, the RG557 can be had for as low as $249.99.

Also listed is the RG406H, a horizontal handheld with a 4-inch IPS touchscreen, the same Unisoc T820 chip, 8GB RAM, and 128GB SSD. Best Buy’s price for this handheld is $229.99, making it the most affordable option among the three, though still more expensive than the standard retail price found directly from Anbernic.

Finally, the RG406V, a vertical version of the aforementioned RG406H, comes in at $249.99. It shares the same specs as the RG406H but offers a Game Boy-inspired design that appeals to those who prefer a more nostalgic form factor.

Retail Push Incoming?

While the arrival of these handhelds at a major U.S. retailer is a major win for mainstream accessibility, it’s important to note that all three models are listed at prices higher than those offered through Anbernic’s official website or other online outlets. As of now, the listings are marked “Coming Soon,” with a “Notify Me” option available for interested buyers.

For gamers who prioritize convenience, buying through Best Buy may be worthwhile. However, price-conscious consumers may still prefer to order directly from Anbernic to save money.

UPDATE: Best Buy Marketplace Coming Soon

Shortly after this piece was published, we were reminded that Best Buy Marketplace is coming soon. According to the official landing page, this will allow companies to “partner with a trusted brand,” while having products listed on the Best Buy website.

However, seeing as Best Buy says this isn’t arriving until the Summer, either Anbernic, tomtoc, and GameSir were able to skip the line, or Best Buy is now offering products from those companies. Either scenario isn’t all that far-fetched, however, it’s worth noting that AYANEO began selling handhelds such as the 2S, Next Lite, and even the Pocket DMG last August.

No matter what the reason is, we’re still happy to have more retailer options besides just AliExpress, Amazon, or directly from the OEM.
