Bringing around the heat of summer means it’s the perfect time to stay in, ignore the sun, and pick up a few more games that you may or may not ever play. From old school racing games to modern remakes, and anything else you could find in between.
If you’re looking for 8 more games to help grow your backlog across your x86 handhelds, this is definitely the place for you. And if you’re more looking for something to run through GameNative, or even PortMaster, there’s at least one option for you as well.
So let’s dig in and talk about 8 more games to grow your backlog.
Mina the Hollower

First up is probably one of the biggest game releases of recent months that isn’t a major AAA development, and that’s Mina the Hollower. Originally announced back in 2022, this game has been in development for 4 years with the goal of being an excellent 2D action-adventure platformer in what’s probably the most nostalgic-feeling pixel art you’ll find. Aiming to follow that 8-Bit styling you might’ve found on the Game Boy Color, but not actually due to all of the pixels, you’re getting a great atmosphere, soundtrack, and story that Yacht Club has nailed once again.
And just like you’d expect from the community, when they latched onto this game, you saw everyone trying to load it up through GameNative across a number of devices, but more impressive than that, as of June 23rd, there is a proper port of Mina the Hollower over on the PortMaster website. So it’s something you could play on just about anything.

Bubsy 4D

Following up a major 2D release comes, in my eyes, a major 3D release as well. Bubsy 4D is the most recent revival of a 90’s… classic? Published by Atari, but developed by Fabraz, who released Demon Tides, a game from my first recommendation article; you’re rip rolling and riding across a bunch of new platforming levels; in space! With an emphasis on going fast, the game looks good, sounds good thanks to its jazzy as hell soundtrack, and feels like a proper revival of a gaming franchise that I was too young to experience properly in its “hayday.”
As for where you can play this? Thanks to the super low minimum requirements of “3.0GHz processor” and “GT 740 or equivalent”, it really wasn’t that hard to get this up and running through GameNative. That being said, if you’re trying to play it anywhere else, an x86 handheld is probably going to be your only other choice.

Big Hops

Sticking with modern 3D platformers, my next recommendation on this list is Big Hops, a freestyle froggy-based platformer. The goal, as always with these 3D platformers, is to get around the map any way you can to get to the end, and Big Hops takes this seriously. From your standard jumps, leaps, dives, and wall climbing to using vegetables, fruits, and some nuts to grow your way around the map. And it wouldn’t be frog gameplay without the use of a long tongue to help swing your way across the map or to solve a few puzzles here and there. This one is a colorful and creative game, and it’s worth a look.
And as a sidenote to help with those curious about GameNative capability, I’ve personally been playing this game through my Odin 3, but that being said, this is definitely not one you can run on some lower-end chips in my opinion. But if you’ve got a Thor, Konkr Pocket Fit, or similar? Absolutely try and give this one a go there too.

Old School Rally

Pulling back from those big bad 3D platformers is something definitely more my speed. Whether it was Dirt in the early 2010’s, or Colin McRae Rally in the 2000’s, I enjoyed rally games for what they were. That classic point-to-point racing. Old School Rally brings that back in spades. With a great lineup of rally cars, a variety of surfaces and locations to drive across, and that need to go as fast as you can, Old School Rally is a game that scratches that nostalgic itch and is something worth giving a go.
With recent updates around racing wheel support, you could even run this game on PC and really drive your way through the 90s, but for me, I just take my controller and enjoy the work from Frozen Lake Games.
As always, this one is super easy to run on both PC and GameNative, but unfortunately it does not feature any ports to iOS, Android, or PortMaster; though it’d be super sick to see.

Peglin

Because I can’t seem to get away from gambling roguelikes, I need to put out a mention for Peglin, a Pachinko-style roguelike and turn-based RPG. As a kid, my dad owned a Pachinko machine that was never turned on because he just didn’t have the balls for it. But now that I’m older and can play with my digital balls, Peglin is an addictive game that I use to see just how far I can get myself in just one run. Like the other Roguelikes I’ve featured, you likely won’t go through just one round of Peglin, and if you pick this one up, be prepared to play. And play. And play.
Unlike some of the other options on this list, not only is this one available through your capable GameNative device, but you can also pick up Peglin over on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store, where you can get the full game for just $10.

Cursed to Golf

Taking a side step from the gambling, racing, and platforming, it’s worth calming things down, taking a trip straight down to hell and doing some golfing in an attempt to escape for your life. Another roguelike in terms of style, Cursed to Golf is a 2D deckbuilding golfing game where your goal is to beat par, beat the obstacles, and finish the back nine in an attempt to get back to wherever you’ve been struck down.
If you’re looking for something that lets you swing a club, this is not only a good one, but a good one that can easily be tossed onto your GameNative-capable device and booted up with ease for short runs, or long gameplay sessions.

Dicey Dungeons

I simply cannot stop with the roguelikes this time around. Another older release, Dicey Dungeons is a dice-based deck-building roguelike where you and your team have been turned into a bunch of dice, and your goal is to escape the dungeons without getting taken down. This is a colorful game with great sound, great gameplay, and an overall great experience for those looking to roll the dice and see how far you can get through your dungeons.
If you are looking to see how you can play this in different formats, Dicey Dungeon has plenty of options thanks to its age. You can grab Dicey Dungeons off both the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store. If you’ve only got your Linux-based handhelds, that’s fine too, because Dicey Dungeons is also available thanks to a port through Portmaster. And last but not least, you can obviously get this one running on GameNative with ease.

Marble It Up! Ultra

Last but not least is a game that gives me a lot of nostalgia personally. When I was younger, I remember visiting my friend’s house, getting on their iMac, and playing one of those marble games where your goal is to get it to the end of the level as quickly as possible. That’s what Marble It Up! Ultra puts back into my mind, and does it even better.
With new levels, new music, and a bunch of new power-ups, you’re still aiming to get to the end of the level as quickly as possible, but now with new tools and possibly new gems to collect along the way. Just like with some of the other games on this list, speedrunning becomes the name of the game, and as your times get better, you can climb the leaderboard too.
If you’re looking to play this on the go, your two options are really going to be through an x86 handheld, or through GameNative if you’ve got a higher-end handheld. Regardless, this game is one that needs good sticks to play, so if you’ve got that and the power to push it, you’re looking at a good time.

Final Thoughts
As always, some of these games may not be your jam, but at the same time you might have something to find in a lot of them. That’s why it’s great to see Steam’s catalog growing so much on a daily basis. With Steam sales running constantly throughout the year, you can easily find most, if not all, of these games on sale in some capacity.

Thanks to my inability to turn down game bundles, and the thousands of games Stubbs piles into our Steam Family Library, I’m always going to have dozens of recommendations for games. So be sure to stick around to see what you can grab to grow your backlog, or give me some recommendations over on the Retro Handhelds Discord. I’m always looking for more.
