A small team called RoboVerse Translations is working on an English translation of Super Robot Wars 64, the Japan-exclusive tactical RPG that launched on the Nintendo 64 back in 1999 and has eluded Western players ever since. It is yet another win for gaming preservation and accessibility, cracking open a corner of one of the most notoriously region-locked franchises in the medium.

Super Robot Wars, as a series, has always had a rough go of it outside Japan. The games pull in licensed mecha and characters from shows like Mobile Suit Gundam, Giant Robo, and Dancouga, and the licensing headaches involved in bringing all of that overseas have historically kept most entries stranded in Japanese.

A handful of titles have slipped through over the years, mostly the Original Generation spin-offs on GBA and DS that sidestep the licensing mess by using only original characters, plus a few recent entries with English subtitles available through Asian releases or Steam. But the mainline classics, including Super Robot Wars 64, have never officially made it to English-speaking audiences.

Super Robot Wars 64 plays like other entries in the series: grid-based tactical combat across flat terrain, anime-style cutscenes with 2D sprites over 3D backgrounds, and a crossover roster that reads like a mecha fan’s dream journal. It is a product of its era in all the best ways, and finally, having an English script will let a whole new audience dig into it without a translation guide open in another tab.

RoboVerse Translations is sharing progress via Discord and YouTube, with a couple of work-in-progress videos already posted. No release window yet, but for a project like this, patience is part of the deal.
