A highly anticipated entry in the handheld gaming scene, the MagicX Touch Zero 40 is officially set to launch on June 17th, according to MagicX’s Sean on Discord. This long-awaited device has garnered significant attention since it was first revealed in 2024, with all of the retro handheld community closely following its development.
The standout feature of the MagicX Touch Zero 40 is its extra-wide screen, specifically designed to support dual-screen emulation, most notably, Nintendo DS titles. Unlike many handhelds that require switching between displays, the Zero 40’s unique form factor allows both DS screens to be displayed simultaneously, offering a seamless and authentic emulation experience for the DS library.
Perfect for DS Emulation?
The long-screen feature alone positions the Zero 40 as a potential favorite for DS fans. The ability to play games as they were originally intended sets the Zero 40 apart in a crowded field.

However, if the sole desire is to play DS games, the Zero 40 features smaller screens than its inspiration. That being said, the handheld beats the 2005 handheld in terms of emulation power and ease of use for non-DS entries.
With such a long screen, the question of how standard 4:3 or even 16:9 content will look on the device. But the retro handheld space overall is shifting away from all-encompassing devices to making specifically targeted devices meant mostly for singular consoles. For instance, while the RG34XXSP can play 4:3 and 16:9 content perfectly well if a user is fine with its 3.4-inch screen, the device is very specifically honing in on GBA nostalgia.
Odd but Unique Design
In terms of design, the device maintains a relatively sleek, modern look with expected control inputs including a D-pad, action buttons, and a singular analog stick situated on the left of the device. It also runs on Android, like the company’s most recent handheld, the Mini Zero 28.
At launch, the Zero 40 will be available in only black and white color options.
A showcase video is also set to premiere on June 17th, offering a closer look at the Zero 40’s features and in-game performance. While it’s being billed as a “review,” those familiar with MagicX’s past launches will know to temper their expectations; these videos typically highlight gameplay footage rather than provide in-depth analysis. For a comprehensive and critical breakdown, be sure to stay tuned to Retro Handhelds, the go-to source for detailed reviews and thorough breakdowns.
With its bold focus on DS emulation and a design optimized for long play sessions, the MagicX Touch Zero 40 is shaping up to be a major release in the emulation handheld space.
