“It’s shockingly convoluted” – Gandhi, GC-colored RP5 owner, and avid PlayStation user
Setting up PlayStation 5 (or 4) remote play is easy and can be done before you’re done reading this paragraph. Step 1: Download PS Remote Play from the Play Store. Step 2: Open it and sign in. Step 3: Run it and —
Okay, I lied. I lied in an article. My journalistic integrity is gone and Stubb’s is planning my downfall as we read this. Truly one of the blunders of all time. The PS Remote Play app doesn’t work on either the Retroid Pocket 5 or the Mini. Why? Our good ole’ friends over at Retroid unlocked the bootloader by default for these devices.
What is a bootloader used for? For loading arbitrary code that can flash your device with a new Android version, OR even root it (which actually “voids” your warranty, which is kind of funny all things considered). The PS App detects this on your devices and gives you a gentle but firm “Nah I’m good but thanks 👍 🙏”. (RP5 and RP Mini are shown interchangeably throughout the article, But the process is exactly the same).
So yeah, PS Remote play is actually a feat that can’t be accomplished and you’re screwed. Okay, I lied again, twice to cancel our last one. Anyways here’s how to get remote play working without Sony breathing too hard down your back. For this guy, we will be using an old favorite: Chiaki.
Things You’ll Need
- An RP5, RP Mini, or any Android device to be honest.
- A PS5/PS4 nearby (duh)
- Access to the internet and the ability to type.
- To trust Joe (at your own risk)
Steps to Set Up PlayStation Remote Play
Step 1: Download Chiaki
- From the Play Store, download Chiaki-Up and open it on your Retroid.
Step 2: Register Your Console – Part 1
- *Important: Make sure your console is on the same Wi-Fi as your PlayStation*
- It should auto-detect that you have a PS5 on your Wi-Fi network.
- Tap on the console and start the process of registering it.
- Select your console type.
- Above “PSN Account ID” there’s a link that will take you to a website to obtain a unique key based on your PSN ID.
- Copy and paste the code into the proper spot in the Chiaki app
Step 3: Register your Console – Part 2
- Next, you will need a unique auto-generated remote play key from your PlayStation itself.
- Go to Settings > System > Remote Play
- Enable Remote Play then go back into the menu
- Pair Device. This will generate an 8-digit code to plug into Chiaki to register your console.
- Follow the rest of the prompts on Chiaki to remote into your PS5/PS4
- Congrats! 🎉✨ 🫡🫡🫡✨🎉
Step 4: You Aren’t Done (Tips and Tricks)
- With the console off, open the Chiaki-Up app and go to Settings in the top right.
- “Swap Cross/Moon and Box/Pyramid buttons”. This will make your button locations accurate.
- Set resolution to 1080p. Self-explanatory
- Set your bitrate to 45000.
Step 5: You Are Still Not Done
- To turn on the console, tap it within the app then select “Wake up.” Tap it again when your PS4 or PS5 reappears.
- Swipe from the right to show options at the bottom of the screen and you can toggle on and off touch controls (as of now, this is the only way to access Home, which isn’t that big of a deal). Here you can also toggle on the touch screen to act as the trackpad.
That’s it!
You have mastered Chiaki and can now brag to your friends and family. Alternatively, PXPlay should work similarly and have a similar setup. If not lemme know below! 👇 Or not and silently gloat and get coal from the fat jolly man up North.
