I had a N64 growing up and I played the crud out of it. Well, I still have that N64, but now it is in the closet and I play on a handheld with upscaled graphics. The point is, I, and many people my age, have a ton of nostalgia for this console. I was listening to the Get Played podcast and they had a guest talking about current games with a N64 platformer feel. So I went down a rabbit hole and I am bringing you my findings!

Gwen the Hen 64

This game was so charming and fun. You play as a hen named Gwen. You have to go to 8 different worlds and collect a magic stone to help create chocolate. The platforming in this game is quick and feels really good. The best part? You are able to beat it in under an hour. I think my final play time was 32 minutes.

Corn Kidz 64

Corn Kidz is a homage to the Banjo Kazooie collect-athons from the day. It does what Yooka Laylee set out to do, but actually succeeded. You play as a goat who wants some nachos and ends up getting himself into some trouble. The game has a great set of skills that feel really good to use. I highly recommend giving this one a try!

Super Kiwi 64

I really loved Kiwi 64. This game has great characters and there is a mechanic where you use your beak to climb up surfaces. The gameplay just feels very fun and the levels were quick, but also fun to explore. There is also a sequel-type game included with this as well.

Valkie 64

This game is kind of like “my first Zelda”. It has those great N64-like graphics, but it is a Zelda-like game. It is rather easy, but it is also fun too. It does not overstay its welcome and can easily be enjoyed by people who are a fan of Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask.

Toree Series

The Toree games are great. They are simple and short, but also very addicting. The game has you running to the end of levels as a chicken-like character. There are items to collect to try and 100% each level and eventually, there is a big boss at the end. The best part? There are plenty of games in the series to keep you occupied.
