I am always playing a different RPG. It is my favorite genre of game. I thought, “If I am playing all these games, why not share with the world and maybe another person on the internet can find something fun?”. This is my first attempt at that, so hopefully you find something unique! You can check out my RPGs that never left Japan list here.
Omori
This game is wild. The ending of this game left me completely stunned. It is hard to give away too much of this game without spoilers, so I will do my best. You play in two different worlds. One of the worlds you are playing in the real world as Sunny, a boy who is struggling with depression and moving away in 3 days. You also play in this sort of dream world as Omori going on adventures with your friends.
The combat is nothing to write home about, but the game keeps you coming back with the ominous story. You will keep trying to guess what is happening and what significance the dream and real world have. If you want a unique experience, this one is for you. There is a trigger warning though for anyone struggling with depression as the game tackles this a lot.
Lisa the Painful
This is a weird one. Really weird. I couldn’t tell if I should laugh or be sad while playing this game. This game has a lot of mature themes and humor. It sometimes feels like it is trying too hard to be random/edgy, so if that is not your thing, you will not like it.
You play as Brad, a man living in a post-apocalyptic world. He just casually is strolling and finds a baby and it is a baby girl. Females are very uncommon in this world so he raises her and he keeps her hidden. Suddenly she is kidnapped and you have to save her. You can recruit many different party members and the game reminds me of a very mature Earthbound with the combat and humor.
Ikenfell
Ikenfell is sort of like an indie Hogwarts RPG. You start the game looking for your sister and you end up getting to a school she studies at. This is not a normal school though, this school is for magic. You will find there are some strange things happening and have to try and rescue her with some new friends.
The combat in this game is pretty cool. You play on a small grid-like field. You have to strategically move around as you cast different moves. There is also a timing-based mechanic much like the Mario RPG games. You can pretty the button at the right time to take less damage and even perform more. This one is a shorter game and a really good time.
Evoland
Speaking of shorter games, Evoland is really short. I beat this game in one sitting in under 2 hours. Starting as a mobile game, it has moved its way to many other consoles. The game is not the best game I have played, but the gimmick is really awesome.
As you progress through this game, you unlock different features from well-known JRPG games. You will be starting in that Game Boy DMG-style world and slowly as you progress, you are earning things like weapons, the ability to level up, and even graphical changes. Before you know it, you are traveling through 3D worlds.
Dodgeball Academia
I probably have said this one too many times, but I love a sports RPG! It just always adds such a fun twist on gameplay and I find it so addicting. This one is no different. You play as a young boy fulfilling his dream and attending this Dodgeball university.
The game has you teaming up, attending classes, and battling other students as you level up. You can collect different gear that can help your stats as well. I also love that each character has a special ability. The icing on the cake is the beautiful graphics as well.
