Labor Day is a holiday in the USA that celebrates the economic achievements of workers. I thought it could be fun to discuss some retro games that have gameplay of you doing jobs in it. There are so many great options, so join me while I highlight 5 of my favorites. Luckily our Do Your Job June theme for GotM helped me find some good choices.

Fantasy Life

This game is easily one of my top 3 favorite games for the 3DS. You have the option of choosing between 13 jobs. Yeah, there are the combat ones like mercenaries and paladins, but there are also blacksmiths, cooks, farmers, and more! You can experience the game how you want. Want to just collect materials and craft? Go for it! Want to kill beasts for a bounty? You can do that. The sequel is my most anticipated Switch game coming out this year.

The Firemen

This game never made it to North America, but you can enjoy it with the power of emulation. You and your partner are tasked with putting out fires and civilians. It is a short game, but the gameplay is a ton of fun.

Crazy Taxi

Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! The opening to The Offspring song is almost as iconic as Superman by Goldfinger in Tony Hawk. Crazy Taxi is a great arcade game that has you picking up people and dropping them off at their destination as fast as possible. It’s chaotic and extremely addicting.

The Sims

You can really put any Sims game here, but I just chose the original. This game is a huge time suck, but you love every second of it. A big part of The Sims is making sure you go to work every day so you can get promoted and more money. You can’t afford that pool party without it!

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney

Who would’ve thought playing as a lawyer would be so much fun? Ace Attorney will have you checking crime scenes, interviewing suspects, cross-examining witnesses, and most importantly… yelling “Objection!”. This is a great game to pick up and play a bit before bed and progress more and more of the whacky story.
