Zuiki is bringing a curious piece of SNK history back into circulation with the Fatal Fury: Trilogy Collection, a package that resurrects Magical Company’s three X68000 ports of the classic fighting series for modern X68000 Z hardware. The collection launches March 26th for 8,217 yen and bundles the 1993 ports of Fatal Fury and Fatal Fury 2 alongside 1994’s Fatal Fury Special, all on a single SD card with reproduction manuals.
The Sharp X68000 was a Japan-only computer powerhouse built around arcade-grade hardware, and when it came to home ports in the early ’90s, it regularly smoked everything else on the market. Magical Company handled all three Fatal Fury conversions for the platform, and the results were dramatically better than what most console owners had to endure. While Genesis and SNES ports had to cut corners on graphics and animation, the X68000 versions preserved much closer fidelity to the Neo Geo originals thanks to the platform’s sprite capabilities and color depth.
Don’t expect to casually grab this one. The X68000 Z never launched outside Japan, so the Trilogy Collection isn’t getting a western release either. If you imported one of the original X68000 Z units, you’ll need a proxy service to secure a copy. Pre-orders are live on the Zuiki store and Amazon Japan, with reversible cover art exclusive to direct Zuiki purchases.
It’s another niche compilation for an already niche platform, but for anyone who grabbed an X68000 Z, this is one of the better reasons to dust it off.
