ModRetro, the team behind the ModRetro Chromatic handheld, has opened up a waitlist for their new product, the ModRetro M64.

What is the ModRetro 64?

Previously teased back in March of this year, the ModRetro M64 is an FPGA-related recreation of the Nintendo 64 console, right down to the iconic N64 Controller copy. The console includes four front-facing controller ports, just like the original N64.

The console also comes with USB-C, HDMI, and microSD card slots. Most strikingly, the large, colorful button on the top-front corner is a “menu dial”, which will allow the user to navigate menu options on the console.

M64 and Controller

The M64 is designed to play original N64 cartridges using FPGA technology to deliver 4K output, with the system running an enhanced version of the MiSTer N64 core.

ModRetro 64 vs. Analogue 3D

Unlike the Analogue 3D, which started shipping last week, the ModRetro M64 sticks more closely to the original design of the console it apes (much like it did with the previous ModRetro Chromatic). The N64 controller has been lovingly recreated in the ModRetro M64 version, unlike the more modern 8BitDo partnership that Analogue has taken with their Analogue 3D. This is likely aimed at appealing to purists of the original console’s design.

M64 Arctic White Full

The ModRetro M64 also comes in at $199.99 (likely purposefully matching the N64 original launch price), compared with the Analogue 3D at $249.99. This gives gamers an option for a more traditionally styled N64 emulation console at a lower price, though with fewer overclocking and performance options than the Analogue 3D.

Color Options

Reminiscent of the Funtastic colors once offered by Nintendo, the waitlist landing page for the ModRetro M64 offers the console in three different color offerings: Arctic White, Jungle Green, or Grape Purple. The corresponding controllers will also come in the same color options. The power and Menu Dial buttons will come in a matching color, except for the Arctic White model, which comes with a bright red Menu Dial button.

Conclusion

The ModRetro M64 is an obvious competitor to the Analogue 3D, and with the latter currently out of stock on their website, this is an appealing option for those looking for a more authentic Nintendo 64 playing experience.
