The ONEXSUGAR dual screen handheld has finally been fully revealed after months-long rumors, speculation, and leaks.
ONEXSUGAR was briefly teased last week when OneXPlayer announced a “tasting experience” for the device during GDC 2025. As the event was underway, OneXPlayer and Sugar Cubes fully revealed their collaboration project, the nectar.
ONEXSUGAR is Pretty Sweet
The ONEXSUGAR is a handheld device specifically meant to highlight the usage of dual screens. However, it morphs from a somewhat typical PC handheld design and turns into a two-screen handheld as opposed to simply offering both from the get-go.
The second screen lives on the back of the first one but can be folded down, followed by the controllers on the side of the device, to give a large-body, DS-style form factor.
In the preview trailer shared via Indieggo, the device also appears to have a third use mode where the secondary screen can be positioned to sit atop the larger main screen. If powerful enough, gamers could opt to play a game on the top or bottom screen while watching a walkthrough or reading a guide on the second. With this new play style, gamers could also switch where an emulated 3DS bottom screen would appear, for example.
Autobots, Roll Out
For the past year, classic designs have been a highly anticipated new area of interest for retro handhelds. The Anbernic RG35XX SP, Miyoo Flip, and Powkiddy V20 refresh are all inspired by the clamshell design found on the GBA SP. For DS designs, however, we rarely see many. Some users utilize the dual screen case for the LG V60 or a Surface Duo to create a dual screen form factor, but that is no longer required.
As a bulkier device, the internal specs do leave a lot of mystery. Just based on the shared photos via Indiegogo, the device looks to be a bit thicker than a Steam Deck when fully folded. Judging off the 3.92-inch screen on the bottom and the size of other handhelds that utilize the same size, we could be in for a massive chunker.
The ONEXSUGAR places a larger 16:9 screen atop its bottom 3.92-inch one when in dual screen mode. The bottom screen does bear the same screen size as the one found in the Retroid Pocket Classic that has been gaining notoriety lately through the Flip 2 and Classic launch. However, without more details, we do not know for certain if OnexPlayer and Sugar Cubes are using the same screen.
The ONEXSUGAR is the third handheld debuted today to use the Snapdragon G3 Gen 3. The AYANEO Gaming Pad and Pocket S2 are also said to be using the same chip. Despite being the strongest of the chipsets premiered today by Qualcomm, their main use is still limited to handheld gaming and not full-fledged PC titles.
We’re all sure that the ONEXSUGAR will catch the eyes of aspiring DS emulation lovers, but it still remains to be seen if its large body and Transformers-esque form will appeal to the same subset of people.
