Welcome to the latest edition of Retro Handhelds Weekly. This week, we saw a bunch of news in the world of hardware and software. Our writing team continues to be on an absolute tear, and there’s even a surprise or two sprinkled in! So sit back, grab a cup of coffee, and catch up on what’s happened this week in the world of Retro Handhelds.

Hardware
If there’s one thing we know about retro handhelds, it’s that there is always something new around the corner. Seriously, it’s “worse” than smartphones, as some companies release new handhelds every other week. On the bright side, at least there’s no shortage of options.
AYANEO Unveils the Next 2
AYANEO released a video (with quite possibly the most unnecessary intro sequence in a reveal I’ve ever seen) detailing their upcoming flagship Windows handheld, the AYANEO Next 2. It’s certainly a nice-looking device that seems to be pulling a lot of design influence from the AYANEO Kun.
AYANEO Releases Details on the Pocket VERT
AYANEO released a video on the AYANEO Pocket Vert. While not many additional details on the internal specs were shared, we were able to see several of the hardware components of the device, which share some similarities with the AYANEO Pocket DMG, as well as some specs on the screen being used.
More TrimUI Smart Pro S Details Revealed
It sure seems as though an updated version of the TrimUI Smart Pro is on the way. More details are being revealed about the Smart Pro S, the latest of which comes from MechDIY. The Pro S is said to feature upgraded joysticks, a better Wi-Fi module while being powered by the Allwinner A523.
OneXFly Apex
We have another new x86 handheld on the way, this time from OneXPlayer with the OneXFly Apex. It just recently launched over on Indiegogo, powered by either the Ryzen AI Max 385 or the AI Max+ 395. Pricing starts at $1,399 for the base model, and maxes out at $2,239 if you want the most power.
Anbernic RG DS Dual-Screen Showcase
While many of us await the arrival of the RG DS, Anbernic is determined to give everyone FOMO. A new video was published on the Anbernic YouTube channel, this time, providing another gameplay showcase for the company’s first dual-screen handheld.

Apps and Software
Don’t get me wrong, hardware is definitely fun and exciting to talk about. But what good is an awesome handheld if it doesn’t even work? That’s where software and custom firmware come into play, so here’s everything you might’ve missed this week.
ES-DE for Android Adds Early Support for Dual-Screen Handhelds
It was only a matter of time, but ES-DE didn’t wait long to release its latest update. This one is actually pretty massive, but especially for AYN Thor and Pocket DS owners, as ES-DE 3.4.0-56 introduces early support for dual-screen handhelds. Not only that, but ES-DE for Android also now supports GameHub Lite, GameNative, aPS3e, and the Epic Games Store.
NeoStation Is a New Retro Emulation Frontend

We first caught wind of NeoStation last month when it was officially announced, and now, it’s officially available. The front-end is focused on retro emulation and can be downloaded for Android and Windows, with Linux, macOS, and iOS listed as “coming soon.”

From the Writers
While there’s always a lot of news to cover and talk about, we also try to take a step back and give everyone something a bit different to enjoy. These are the more editorial-styled articles and reviews that you might have missed over the course of this week.
A Fistful Of Sequels: Three Brawlers Time Forgot
Many sequels have broadened or reinvented what the previous installment accomplished; too often, though, successful sequels have been forgotten due to changes in media, platforms, and time. Today, we pour one out for sequels to some of gaming’s most beloved titles: Golden Axe, Kung-Fu Masters (Kung-Fu on NES), and Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
Satisfye ZenGrip 2 For Switch 2 Review
Let’s be honest: The Switch 2 is a flat, rounded-edged tablet with equally flat, rounded attachable controllers. And that stinks. Not for your 8-year-old nephew trying to play Minecraft, but for the grown ass adults who work too hard to come home and cramp their hands on a slender, yet notably heavier Mario machine. We deserve better. We deserve a grip! Does Satisfye have the answer to this problem we are looking for? Maybe…
Super Pocket Re-Review: Still Worth it?
Nearly two years ago, I took a look at the HyperMegaTech Super Pocket, specifically the Taito edition, back when it was $49. Two years later, the price has gone up, but is it worth $69 now? Not nice. Which version should you get?
Miyoo Mini Flip Setup Guide
It’s been almost a year since the original Miyoo Flip was released, but it never really managed to become the fan favorite Miyoo had hoped. The tide might be shifting back, however, as the Miyoo Mini Flip has arrived, rocking mostly the same internals as the Miyoo Mini but in a clamshell form factor.
On the YouTubes
Don’t think that the writers are the only ones getting things done. The RH video team is constantly working on new videos, and now’s the best time to subscribe.
