Welcome to the latest edition of Retro Handhelds Weekly. This week, we saw a bunch of news in the world of hardware and software. Our writing team continues to be on an absolute tear, and there’s even a surprise or two sprinkled in! So sit back, grab a cup of coffee, and catch up on what’s happened this week in the world of Retro Handhelds.

Hardware
If there’s one thing we know about retro handhelds, it’s that there is always something new around the corner. Seriously, it’s “worse” than smartphones, as some companies release new handhelds every other week. On the bright side, at least there’s no shortage of options.
Anbernic RG476H
With much of our focus being on the battle between AYN and AYANEO, some might have been wondering what Anbernic might be up to. Over the past week or so, the RG476H was announced and has been teased, just the latest handheld to make use of the 4.7-inch 120Hz screen we’ve seen recently. As luck would have it, Mr. Retro Game Corps managed to get one of these early, and dropped an excellent video detailing what we can expect from the RG476H.
Is An Anbernic DS Around The Corner?
Not long after showcasing the upcoming RG476H, Reddit user u/Qinki001 has shared some QQ screenshots that allege Anbernic is finally releasing a dual-screen clamshell device, after months of speculation. According to these leaks, the company is developing a device that closely mimics the form factor of the iconic Nintendo DSi, while also offering integer scaling of the DS’s native 256×192 resolution.
Miyoo Mini Flip Colors Revealed
After months of speculation and whispers, new photographs and a bit of information (courtesy or Redditor u/TenLevels confirm the imminent release of the Miyoo Mini Flip, the fold-in-half-able version of the infamous Miyoo Mini.
R46H Features TrimUI Brick Screen and RK3326
If there’s one thing we can count on, it’s that there will always be another handheld clone that randomly appears on AliExpress. The latest of which is the R46H, which we were first tipped off about thanks to the AeolusUX on the RH Discord. At first, this just looks like yet another clone of a clone, but the R46H has something that those others don’t. Instead of the boring 3.5-inch 640×480 screens that plague the market, the R46H is equipped with a 4.2-inch 1024×768 display, which is the same screen found in the TrimUI Brick and XU Retro’s XU20 V32.
Someone Turned a Game Boy DMG into a Miyoo DMG
Many of our favorite retro handhelds invoke some sort of nostalgia for an original handheld, but it’s not very often that we see a melding of the two. However, that’s exactly what u/NumerousLow8666 did, as they ripped out the guts of an original Game Boy, replacing them with the internals of a Miyoo Mini. This mod even goes so far to provide USB-C charging, and cut outs for the L1/R1 and L2/R2 buttons. Hit the link below to learn more about this mod, because it’s a doozy.

Apps and Software
Don’t get me wrong, hardware is definitely fun and exciting to talk about. But what good is an awesome handheld if it doesn’t even work? That’s where software and custom firmware come into play, so here’s everything you might’ve missed this week.
Gamehub 5.0 Launches With Steam Cloud Saves
GameSir quietly launched version 5.0 of its GameHub Android application, a hybrid gaming frontend with the ability to install Steam games via translation layer, not unlike Winlator or Gamenative. This update introduced even better Steam integration, finally making it possible to sync your saves with Steam’s servers.
Since then, GameSir has released a few more updates, aiming at fixing bugs, as the most recent version is now up to 5.0.5. With version 5.0.3, we were provided with a better “controller experience,” along with being optimized for Hollow Knight: Silksong.
Citron 0.7 Released
WIth all of these powerful handhelds coming out before the end of the year, we’re seeing some major updates being released for our favorite emulators. The latest of which is version 0.0.7 of Citron, which “represents a complete ground-up rewrite of the Citron Emulator.” There are too many changes to list, so hit the button below to check out everything that’s new and try it out for yourself.
Eden is First Switch Emulator on Play Store
Speaking of Switch emulation, last week saw the stable release of Eden v0.0.3, which is available to download from the team’s GitHub repository. Apparently, that’s hasn’t been the only way you can download it, as Eden is now the first Switch emulator to be released onto the Google Play Store. This is absolutely wild, but it’ll also be interesting to see how long this lasts before Nintendo tries to step in.
Everything Announced at the September Nintendo Direct
Nintendo just hosted what was, by the internets standards, one of the Nintendo Directs of all time. Criticism aside, this over an hour long direct hosted a myriad of new and updated release for the Switch 1 and 2 consoles with, as you might have guessed, more re-releases and remasters of older titles are well as numerous retro-inspired ones. Let’s cut the meandering and get to the good stuff!

From the Writers
While there’s always a lot of news to cover and talk about, we also try to take a step back and give everyone something a bit different to enjoy. These are the more editorial-styled articles and reviews that you might have missed over the course of this week.
Celebrating 30 Years of PS1 and 26 Years of Dreamcast in the U.S.
Three decades have passed since Sony shared the magic of their PlayStation console with American audiences, and what wonderful decades they’ve been. From humble beginnings, Sony’s first console caught on like wildfire upon release, bringing video games firmly into the 3rd dimension.
PowKiddy V90S Setup Guide
It had about five years since the PowKiddy V90 was released when its successor, the PowKiddy V90S, finally arrived. In that time, the V90 became a fan favorite, despite all of its flaws, as it was one of the first and only available clamshell retro handhelds. Now that it’s replacement is here, we’re here to help walk you through getting it set up from start to finish.
How To Use Legal Emulation on the Nintendo Switch 2 (and Switch 1)
Despite owning two modded Switches (an OLED and a Lite), I had never really experimented with the Switch’s ability to play retro games before owning my Switch 2. After a short while experimenting, what I found surprised me. It turns out that Nintendo has been paying more attention to the emulation scene than just sending the cease and desist letters to the likes of Yuzu and Ryujinx
Game Over: The NEO•GEO X
SNK Corporation went bankrupt in 2001, and by 2004, their legendary NEO•GEO console had received its last game, a whopping 14 years after its home debut. For the rest of the decade, SNK went through a number of restructures, legal battles, and acquisitions, resulting in the company eventually re-emerging as SNK Playmore, with a new focus on arcade development for Sammy’s Atomiswave hardware.
HexGaming Phantom Review: The Best PlayStation Controller you Don’t Need
When HexGaming sent over their Phantom to check out, I decided to give it a shot, and skip from my experience with a DualShock 3 to something built on the DualSense platform instead. Is this a controller worth grabbing? And should you spend your hard earned dollars on it? Now’s the time to find out.
Radical Retrospective: Go! Go! Hypergrind
By now, this column has established that Japan had a large presence in the skateboarding game genre, but by 2003, the space had diversified in a big way. Tony Hawk’s series had over a half-dozen titles published, Disney, Nickelodeon, and The Simpsons had grabbed for a slice of the pie. MTV and Thrasher magazine released divisive titles in the genre (more on those in the coming weeks), and EA was only a year away from beginning development on the now-legendary skate. series.
On the YouTubes
Don’t think that the writers are the only ones getting things done. The RH video team is constantly working on new videos, and now’s the best time to subscribe.
