One brilliant modder has made a Game Boy Advance SP for the end of time. Redditor u/Bangooh created a Franken-SP attached to a DeWalt XR FLEXVOLT power tool battery. Essentially, a retro handheld that could fit into a contractors tool box instead of a toy chest.
It’s ridiculous, rugged and based on commenter’s guestimates, should run continuously for approximately 17 days without interruption.
All of the internal components of the original GBA were preserved in this modification, except for the battery, obviously. In its place the modder used a buck converter that takes the 18 volt input from the DeWalt battery and drops it to about 4 volts which is what the original Gameboy Advance SP needed to operate. Due to the fact that the DeWalt battery has a rating of 162 watt hours, the runtime of this build is now in a completely new class compared to everything ever made for a handheld.
This build is limited only by your patience, wrist strength, or the inevitable heat death of the universe.
Bangooh painted the shell of the handheld the same industrial yellow and black colors that DeWalt uses on their products, and added a DeWalt logo that is so professionally applied that at first glance, the handheld appears to be a legitimate DeWalt product accessory. The massive drill battery serves as a base for the handheld, providing a sense of retro-industrial charm that is hard to ignore.
For those who need it spelled out, this is a one off mod and not commercially available. But, at a time when manufacturers of handheld gaming platforms are focusing on making sleeker designs and smaller form factors, this build dares to dream huge.

DeWalt x Nintendo colab, this scores pretty high on the theoretically awesome chart. Very nice.

Wonderfully innovative idea. Which buck converter is used to get out down to 4v? amazing.
Interesting idea but what happened to the shoulder buttons?
1st thing i noticed and also love your waffle profile pic
They are literally right there, how are neither of you seeing it.
They’re not blind. The L and R buttons are missing. The switches for them are exposed and visible, but the plastic bits you directly press in normal circumstances are not present. You shouldn’t be able to see the circuit board.
Just because you can, doesn’t mean that you should.
Are you blind?
Reminds of my original gameboy from the early 90, my dad wired a old 6v motorcycle battery to it because he wanted me to be able to use it while I was in Brazil visiting my grandparents for the entire summer and they lived in the countryside and power was not always reliable. I only had to charge it twice in for the whole summer
On the reddit thread the guy says he didnt fully reassemble yet as of thise pictures, put they should be able go back on fine
You’re right Waffle Ryebread, but where are Alicia, Red And Malt?
Do you have a YouTube account so I could subscribe to you?
Is it playing mp3s? Im sure aviici sounds aweful on a gba
Awesome! Now do this for the steam deck.
Cute but not useful, ergonomic or even ruggedized. Just a color matched shell screwed to a huge adapter. A dewalt usb charger and a usb mod on the gba would have been more usable. I suspect the drain on the battery may be so low it will over discharge the cells inside as well without triggering low voltage cutoff.
I think this is awesome! The craftsmanship, the creativity are just awesome. The crucial time to think of this sort of thing are among us. I want this guy in my camp in my moment of need!
Looks awesome! I would buy one! If wasn’t made by the devil…
