The release of the Retroid Classic and Flip 2 brewed so many ideas in my head about trying to make it look like the device it’s trying to emulate. That GameCube flip, the PKM Classic…the potential was right there!
The Classic
I originally wanted the Lime Classic, but with the shipping woes, I ultimately decided on getting the PKM. The colors were very cool, fun, and unique, so I just had to cover up some of the Retroid branding and make it look like a Game Boy.
I got the original back stickers from Bazaar Trades on eBay. They came quickly and look great on the back of the shell! Just this little touch really helped give it a more Game Boy vibe.
Now for the Pokémon sticker: this one was a bit more difficult. I ordered one originally, and it had a white border. I tried to sloppily trim it away, and it looked just okay. I decided to message the seller, and he made it bigger, took off the white border, and it now looks great. If you get the bordered one, message the seller about no white border, and they will help out. It’s from Slick Games on eBay.
Retroid Pocket Flip 2
Stop me if you’ve heard this before… the logo on the lid of the Flip 2 is weird. Everyone says it, so my first step of customizing this was to cover it up. I reached out to RetroGemz on Etsy, and they were able to make a custom cover that looked like the original GameCube logo. They have some that say Retroid, but I wanted it to look like a real GameCube handheld.
The quality of this sticker is really nice. It’s the perfect size and is a laminated kind of bubble? The adhesive is very strong, too, so make sure you line it up perfectly. I have slid this in and out of my pocket so many times, and it’s still holding strong.
Now the inside is very empty looking, so I found someone who does metallic decals, and one looked like it would go great in the inside. The logo looks very similar to that of the GameCube controller, and the size is perfect. I messed up putting it on, so it’s a little off, and it haunts me, but it still looks so good. Check out 2DOCustoms on Etsy for some great products!
Conclusion
Customizing these devices is another fun thing you can do. I really enjoy the look of both of these now, and I think it is totally worth it to have a corporate-looking handheld. A handheld GameCube that is OLED, clamshell, and can play a ton of other consoles? That is awesome! Have you done any customizing you want to share?
