On their official Discord, MagicX announced that a new handheld has entered its product testing phase: the Retro 45.
Recently, MagicX emerged as a standout name in the retro handheld community as it sets itself apart in a space where most brands focus on raw power, sleek design, and broad compatibility. MagicX stands out through its focus on niche features and its precision in fine-tuning devices for specific use cases.
MagicX Does it All
The MagicX Zero 40 reflects this philosophy. It targets the demand for a dedicated DS emulation device and delivers an innovative offering. The handheld uses a single elongated screen that displays both DS screens simultaneously. Aside from dual-screen consoles and unusual devices like the Surface Duo, it remains one of the most distinctive handhelds released in recent memory.

Before the Zero 40, the company launched the Mini Zero 28, a micro handheld that runs Android in a condensed form. The Mini Zero 28 differs from other handhelds of similar sizes by not only using Android, but by also including dual analog sticks on its face. These sticks support select PS1 titles and also let users repurpose hotkeys to their heart’s desire. After receiving community feedback, the company released a slightly updated version, appropriately named the MagicX Mini Zero 28 V2.
Retro 45, A New Expedition
As for the Retro 45, only pre-production renders have surfaced so far. MagicX claims the device will emulate Sega Saturn, Dreamcast, and Mega Drive with ease while also fully supporting Nintendo 64 titles. Beyond these claims and the renders, MagicX has not shared additional details.

Earlier this year, the company shared the XU Retro line of devices and the new company’s roadmap for 2025. It did not disclose whether XU Retro is a MagicX offshoot or subsidiary, and the similarly named Retro 45 does not appear in the XU Retro lineup. Neither company has confirmed any formal connection. However, all XU Retro news continues to come from MagicX.
XU Retro did recently tease the upcoming XU 20 V32 release, and it is unclear if the Retro 45 will follow or tie into that launch. This appears to be the first device from MagicX to use the name “Retro” instead of typical “Mini” or “Touch” that usually labels its micro and touchscreen devices. Before being shortened to simply Zero 40, the device was known as the Touch Zero 40 as it houses a touchscreen.
Based on past patterns, MagicX will likely follow this announcement with a steady stream of updates, images, and technical details, just as we saw with the Zero 40 before it. As always, Retro Handhelds will keep you updated as more news becomes available.
