Yesterday evening (last evening?), we learned that despite following protocol and countering a DMCA notice, the Eden Releases GitHub repo was “disabled.” The news was announced over on the Eden Discord, providing a brief overview of what was going on.

Over the past month or so, Nintendo has been on another crusade against Switch emulators, taking down quite a few of the various Eden, Citron, Yuzu, and Ryujinx forks that have been cropping up. However, in the case of many of the more popular ones, the actual code wasn’t being hosted on GitHub.

Instead, developer teams, like Eden, have resorted to alternative methods for hosting their codebase. It wasn’t until somewhat recently that “Releases-only” GitHub repositories began appearing, and in the case of Eden, that was the repo to which the DMCA notice was submitted.

In the announcement, @crueter provides the following reassurance about the existing codebase and where to find future releases:

Our source code and releases aren’t going anywhere, as they are hosted at https://git.eden-emu.dev/eden-emu/eden (releases at https://git.eden-emu.dev/eden-emu/eden/releases), and this will be the exclusive method of distribution for official release builds going forward. You may access a backup of all releases (not including 0.2.0-rc1) at https://archive.crueter.xyz/github/eden-emulator/Releases/ in the meantime.

On the downside, it’s frustrating to see Eden treated this way by GitHub, provided that the team went through the correct channels to try and “fight” the DMCA notice. It’s also rather curious that Nintendo decided to make the rounds again, seeing as things were finally starting to settle down. Nevertheless, at least Eden is still in active development, and the entire project wasn’t just removed from existence.

It’s worth noting that in the case of several of the other Switch emulators, such as Kenji-NX and Ryubing, while GitHub repos may have been removed, they have also moved to alternative hosting. And it’s not that difficult to figure out where they are, as long as you have a general idea of where to go looking.
