Anbernic surprised many when it introduced a new clamshell into the mix, but it was likely done in response to the Miyoo Flip. Nevertheless, the RG34XXSP has arrived, and if you’re trying to figure out where to start or what’s possible, we’ve got you covered.

Game Room or RA Game?

Anbernic RG34XXSP First Impressions - 3

When it comes to emulation on retro handhelds, performance varies depending on the platform. This is why you see things like Game Room or RA Game on the RG34XXSP.

But which should you choose?

To put it simply, Game Room is where all of the standalone emulators, such as PPSSPP for PSP or DraStic for Nintendo DS. Meanwhile, RA Game is where you’ll find all of the available RetroArch cores.

As for which one to choose, it depends on which system you’re trying to play. For the most part, RetroArch is the answer, but when it comes to those more powerful systems, then Game Room is the way to go.

  2. Turn off your RG34XXSP.
  3. Insert the microSD card into the slot on the right.

Custom Firmware

Anbernic RG34XXSP Setup Guide - StockOS Mod Boot Screen 2

With the RG34XXSP, there are already a few custom firmware options to choose from. It’s worth noting that some of these are still in beta, as hardware was needed to properly account for the new form factor. That being said, you might have some luck with others that supported the RG34XX, but you’ll miss out on the Sleep/Wake function when closing or opening the lid.

What You’ll Need

  • Anbernic RG34XXSP
  • microSD card
  • Windows, macOS, or Linux PC
  • Package Manager (7-Zip for Windows)
  • Wi-Fi connection
    • Mostly used for on-device scraping of metadata and artwork, updates, or easier downloading of PortMaster titles.
