While preparing for the latest edition of Retro Handhelds Weekly, I stumbled upon a rather surprising change over at the AYN website. The Odin 2 (Base) is no longer in stock, in any configuration.

This wasn’t the case just yesterday, as it was included in yesterday’s Deals of the Week update. Meanwhile, both the Odin 2 (Pro) and Odin 2 (Max) models are still available, both from AYN directly and Amazon.

AYN Odin 2 Base Out of Stock

You could just chalk this up to AYN running out of stock, only for it to be replenished in the coming days. However, this marks the first time that I can remember seeing the Odin 2 out of stock at all, since its launch back in December 2023.

Needless to say, this has a few of us wondering whether it’s a sign that AYN is getting things in order before introducing an Odin 3. There hasn’t been much in the way of rumors regarding an Odin 3, partially thanks to the release of the Odin 2 Portal and Odin 2 Mini.

With that in mind, it’s interesting to think about what the Odin 3 would offer in terms of specs and design. We would have to assume that a new chip is in order, but would AYN opt for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3? Maybe AYN would join ranks with AYANEO, relying on the Snapdragon G3 Gen 3 found in the Pocket S2 and S2 Pro.

From there, I’d be curious to see if the Odin 3 adds OLED, something we didn’t see in the Odin 2 lineup until the Portal. Then again, all of the various decisions come down to where the Odin 3 might be priced at.

This remains one of the biggest reasons to consider an Odin 2, as it offers one of the best “bang for the buck” experiences out there. Despite being more than two years old, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is still a beast when it comes to high-end emulation, especially when using custom Turnip drivers.

Nevertheless, we’ll be keeping a close watch on this situation to see if anything comes of it, or if AYN really did just run out of supply with no plans to restock.
